Captain Nikos

Boats and Apartments

About Us

Back in 1982, when Captain Nikos was still a fisherman, he began to work with visitors to the island, in particular hiring boats to them.  He was one of the first people on the island to do this and worked very hard at improving the service he offered to them.   Year by year he built up his fleet of boats, buying new models, so he could offer his clients the best possible choice of boats.  Captain Nikos was always kind and diplomatic to his clients and all of this combined to ensure he had many return clients.

Sadly Captain Nikos died in September 2007 and he is greatly missed both by his family and the people of Loggos.  The business is now run by his son, Panayiotis who worked very closely with his father from his youth.  The name of the business has not been changed and is a memorial to Captain Nikos and the business he established and built over many years.

Loggos, midway up the eastern side of the island, has two superb seafood restaurants, a handful of cafes and bars, as well as a bakery. From there, a ten-minute drive north gets you to Lakka, or the same distance going south to Gaios.

We hired a boat. Captain Nikos charged us 60 euros a day for a 25cc motorboat, plus a rather expensive petrol bill on top. After a 15-minute beginners' tutorial, we were equipped to motor off.

There are about 30 beaches to explore on the eastern side but it is well worth making the half-hour trip further south to the neighbouring island of Anti Paxos.

CORFU . . . AND SEAPLANE TO PAXOS

Skim nine miles south from Corfu in a seaplane, to the smallest of the main Ionian islands. Lack of an airport has protected Paxos from mass tourism. There is now a scheduled seaplane service, but it’s still unhurried and uncluttered. Loggos is the most peaceful of the island’s three villages. Rent a boat from Captain Nikos and visit Mongonissi beach.

Details: Fly Excel Airways (www.xl.com) from £141 return. If you arrive at night, stay near the seaplane take-off point at Hotel Iliada (00 30 266 1091360, www.iliadaomiros.gr) from £15. Morning and afternoon flights with Air Sea Lines (www.airsealines.com) from £41 return. Studios in Loggos from £10 with Planos Holidays (01373 814200, www.planos.co.uk). Captain Nikos’s boats are from £24 per day plus petrol (00 30 697 3985811).
